Hexie Love!

Ta-dah! It took a little more time than I’d hoped, but it’s finished. And lucky for me, the sun was shining this evening, so I sat outside to do the hand-stitching. And in the end I had this cute little hexie pouch, perfect for carrying myriad bits and baubles. 20120627-213928.jpg

I hand-stitched the pop of green, from Michael Miller‘s Cotton Couture collection, on the inside and then used that same green to make a little tab for the zipper pull.

And that’s my very favorite part–the zipper pull! First I ironed some of the stiff fusible to one of the hexies, whipstitched the green part into the inside of that hexie, then laid another on top and did a little ladder stitch between them. Turned out lovely, if I do say so myself.

And I love this Kate Spain fabric even more now. She has a new collection called Serenade out now that I think I’d love in-person just as much.

I may have to make more of these to put in the shop. Thoughts?

Is it Hexie Love?

While I managed to get through the hexie hubbub last year without getting sucked in, it wasn’t really because I didn’t want to. I’ve wanted to try them for a long time, but just hadn’t for one reason or another.

But last weekend as we prepped for a road trip to Olympia for the air show, I knew I’d need a project to keep my hands busy on the drive and while I sat outside the air show-proper with the dogs.

I’d gotten a tiny charm pack of Kate Spain‘s Good Fortune line at last fall’s Quilt Market and have just held on to them, but finally I had a project! They were the perfect size for the little hexagon papers I’d found and so I sat out in the waning sun, cutting hexie papers, pinning them to fabric and readying the fabric bits for our ride north.

Then ironed them precisely around the papers, stitching the corners together so they’d be ready to go in the morning.

I brought it all along in a little bag and while my daughter and the GuyFriend enjoyed the air show and commentary, I sat in the car stitching next to this little guy. (The recipient of the dog bed that he still loves.)

Along the four-hour drive I managed to hand stitch all of these together and on the drive home I stitched them to the denim. Now to make it into something useful.
