Many folks assume they have to use a vintage quilt for a quilt coat, but really your options are limitless. Check out this variety, all made using the Elemental Coat pattern from Crinkle Dreams.

Corduroy

This Elemental Coat was made with the hood option in a cropped length, using baby-wale corduroy from Cloud9 Fabrics. It’s lined with quilting cotton. You can find these fabrics at KCMaker Studio & Fabrics.

Canvas

This Elemental Coat was made (and modeled) by Nina Clotfelter using the full length and collar options, with canvas from Ruby Star Society.

Denim

I made this Elemental Coat with the hood and full length options, plus added cuffs with the wool plaid used for both hoods and cuffs. It’s a single layer with hood lining and binding made with linen. Kits are available at crinkledreams.com.

Convenience or Cheater Cloth

Using cheater cloth gives you a quilt look without having to piece anything! This Elemental Coat was made with the hood and full length options, using Giucy Giuce cheater cloth purchased from 5 Little Monkeys Quilt & Sew.

Upcycled Tablecloth

I made this Elemental Coat with the collar and full length options, using a tablecloth I purchased from a thrift store. The tablecloth has beautiful cross-stitched designs and was sewn using the tablecloth hem for the sleeves, fronts and back pieces. The collar was hemmed and scraps were used to create the binding around the neckline.

Upcycled Blankets

Susan made (and modeled) this hip length Elemental Coat using the hood option and a finished blanket/bedspread. She kept the binding on for the fronts and backs, then used the same quilting cotton for binding the sleeves, hood and neckline.

Luxe Cuddle

This cropped and hooded Elemental Coat was made with Luxe Cuddle® Seal by Shannon Fabrics. I used a lining fabric that was stitched with a 1/4″ seam allowance instead of binding. There is a frog closure at the neckline.

There are so many great options, far beyond the typical finished quilt, for using the Elemental Coat pattern. I can’t wait to see what you do with it!
