Getting ready for Tet is always a tad overwhelming for me. I want to do far more than I am ever able to accomplish.But this year Jaymee came over early and helped me out with the cooking. She even made the Banana Flower Salad, from start to finish. And I wore my flip-flops to make it feel more like I was still in Vietnam (not–I just forgot to ever change them!).
I've been parenting solo for past the twelve years, learning and growing alongside my children: S, the 18-year-old son and A, the 13-year-old daughter.
In 2006, our trio headed to Vietnam to volunteer in two orphanages, a decision that affected each of us greatly. In 2009, we returned and we have plans to return yet again in 2012.
Through the years, we've dealt with all the good and bad of being a one-parent family. I've grown as a mother, a writer and a woman.
Solo parenting isn't for the weak or timid.
